23/01/1909 .. Dear Sir, – We came to Ryde some years ago, from a well-ordered town where it was a stern rule that no one should burn house or garden rubbish within a certain distance of neighbours’ residences, The Mayor, Medical Officer of Health, and other functionaries had no immunity from this law simply because they were whom they were. For the benefit of other residents I venture to ask, through your columns, if any such law holds good in Ryde? If so, to whom should one appeal to have redress from such nuisance as having one’s home filled unexpectedly from time to time with smoke from the next door gardens? Yours obliged, Householder. (IW Observer) comment: Nothing changes in 100 years does it!!
01/11/1913 .. Dear Sir, – I was more than surprised to find someone has surrounded the piece of ground in Vernon Square with two rows of barbed wire. This is on the outside of the hedge, and in places is quite exposed, so that anyone who inadvertently got too close, or any cyclist who might be driven into the hedge by a passing vehicle would suffer considerable injury. What can the numerous officials connected with the town be doing to permit any person to use barbed wire in a public street to the danger of the passers-by? Even in the country barbed wire may not be placed beside a footpath without being protected in some way, yet here in the middle of the town the officials allow it to be done in a much-frequented thoroughfare. Yours faithfully, Resident, Oct 18 1913. (IW Observer)
