Charles Newman could have been my great great grandfather – I know he was born in Ludgershall, lived and had several of his children in Portsea but one was listed born at Parkhurst – Francis Augustus – always wondered why – may be the answer! How can I find out more?

Hi Ann,

What a great site. My grandfather – Charles William McFarlane was a civil guard in Parkhurst, as listed on your site. I’m trying to trace details of the family and cannot find his birth/marriage records. I wondered if you could help. I know that his first wife was Sarah Ann and his mother was Matilda White and stepfather John White. I don’t know the circumstances of how he married my grandmother Violet Constance Guttridge as she was his niece? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

My great grandfather William Marrison is listed in the 1901 census as Principal Warder, Parkhurst Prison. I know he was still at Dartmoor in January 1901 and seemed to return there in late 1902. Have you any records of his service at the prison?

John Scott was my great grand-father. William Scott was his older brother. I had hoped that there might be a photograph of the warders taken during the time that they served at Parkhurst. I have memories of a photograph of my great grand-father which hung in my grand-mother’s house. He had such a kindly face.
