Parkhurst Women

These are a few names of women prisoners at Parkhurst Prison, which I have extracted from the great many registers located in the National Archives at Kew.  I do have full details, which I can supply to any enquirer, that includes: name, age, crime, sessions, conviction, length of sentence and where they went to upon leaving Parkhurst.
Parkhurst housed women prisoners from 1863 till 1869, at which date they were all transferred, with the staff, to the newly built womens prison at Woking.  The prisoners were supervised by 18 Matrons, 24 Asst Matrons, 3 Schoolmistresses and 1 Scripture Reader (source 1865 Postal & Commercial Directory Hants & IOW) .

One Response to “Parkhurst Women”

  • Jan Toms says:

    Dear Ann,
I am currently researching a book on Villains of the Isle of Wight for the History Press. As you will know, the Island has generally been a law abiding place and happily home grown villains are fairly thin on the ground.

I have a chapter on women, including tragic cases where local mothers killed their children, some genuinely bad girls like Sophie Dawes but also accounts of women who were sent to Parkhurst between 1863-9. You mention that you have further details about the women listed and their crimes and it would be so helpful to learn a little more about some of these unhappy people who found themselves locked up on the Island.

I would really appreciate it if I could gain access to the records. I would of course acknowledge the source of the information in the book.

    My telephone number is 754348,

I must also thank you for all the information you so generously post on the internet as it is often a starting point for further research.

    With ever good wish,
    Jan.
