My grand father Walter Charles Ryall was born in Henstridge Somerset 1869. He joined Hampshire Police 1888 and transferred to the IOW police, collar 239, in 1890 initially to Ventnor Police Station. His next transfer was to Newport where his family lived in the police house at Elm Grove; where my father was born in 1894. Then a transfer to the police house in Brighstone (a lovely old thatch cottage now demolished) & later to Yarmouth police station where he was station sergeant. I remember dad saying they lived there when HMS Gladiator ran aground. His career then led him to the then newly built Cowes Police station at Birmingham Rd in 1905 were he was again station sergeant. The family lived in the police house attached to the police station.

I live in Moosonee, Ontario. South of here in Cochrane, Ontario there is a grave marker that makes reference to the Ex Deputy Chief Constable of the Isle of Wight: Fank [sic] Hale, father of the deceased.
The marker stands out as very different from other ones in the cemetery.

I recently discovered that my great great granddad- Henry Matthews, and great granddad – Thomas Henry Matthews were policemen based at Cowes Police Station in 1916.
I found this information from Thomas Henry Matthews’ Marriage certificate. He married Edith Emma Todman.
It was so fascinating to find out that they both were policemen and worked together at the same station.
Thomas Henry Matthews was 26 years old in 1916 and I believe he was in the military in 1913 but I have no information about his father apart from his name. From what I understand they both were born in London but I do not have any other information than this
I recently contacted Cowes Police station to ask them if they had any archieves but were unable to find anything and pointed me to the history society..
Peter Stoddard from the hc history society visited Hampshire Record Office but could not find these two ancestors in index of Hampshire Constabulary offciers that covers 1839 to 1987.
The problem is that they were members of the independent Isle of Wight Constabulary which ran from 1839 to 1922 when it was amalgamated with Ryde Borough police and then in 1943 joined Hampshire County Constabulary.Their personnel records were not transferred to Winchester.

Hello, I have been looking through your records as my Great, Great, Grandfather was a constable with the Ryde Borough Police. His name was Alfred Edward Webb, his collar number was 3 and he retired in 1903. I have some photographs of him, his old police watch and his whistle. My grandparents had some newspaper cuttings relating to an incident when he arrested a prostitute from London one night and then had to report back on duty the next morning in order to give evidence in court. Unfortunately after my grandparents died we could not find the newspaper cuttings. I thought you may be interested, and perhaps you could add his name to your list.
