23/04/1883 .. On Thursday evening the members of the Vectis Cycling Club assembled at the Town Hall, and started at 6.30 for Newchurch via Sandown.  There was not such a good muster as usual. (IW Observer)

16/05/1885 .. The hon. sec. of the Ryde Cricket Club requests us to state that a scratch game will be played on the grounds at Partlands on Saturday, and that anyone wishing to play (whether a member of the club or not) is requested to be on the ground at 2.30 punctually, when sides will be chosen.  The next match on the Ryde ground will be on Saturday, 23rd inst. against Brading.  (IW Observer)01/04/1905 .. 21/08/1886 .. The Working Men’s Rowing Club – who are to be cordially congratulated on their achievements in this their first season, have decided to present Miss BRIGSTOCKE with the premier prize they won, with the boat she so generously gave them, at the Police Regatta, at Southsea.  The gift takes the form of a silver inkstand in the shape of a boat, and will bear a suitable inscription.  The crew of the new boat have this week succeeded in winning three first prizes on three successive days–at Southsea on Tuesday, Ryde on Wednesday, and at Ventnor on Thursday.  By competing at five regattas they have now four first prizes and one second.  (IW County Press) 

02/03/1907 .. Ryde Billiard Player – H. J. Radley CLARKE, the well-known Island billiard player, will take part in the annual Marker’s Tournament at the Brompton-road Hall, next week.  He stands scratch in the handicap, being owed points only by such well-known players as SPARROW, HARROW, Alex BROWN and E. R. STEVENSON (brother of the famous H. W.)…… (IW Observer)

30/09/1911 .. Swimming the Solent is becoming such an every day affair that it will soon cease to be a matter for comment.  The latest person to cross is a lady named Mrs. E. A. SHILLINGTON, of Gurnard who swam from that place to Stone Point on the mainland in 1 hour 42 minutes.  (IW Observer)

21/03/1914 .. Proficient Police Cueists – That the custodians of law and order are not unfamiliar with the lighter phases of life was shown by the fact that in a billiard match, at the Police Station on Wednesday evening, the police team defeated a team from All Saints Guild by four games to two.  The scores were Police– PC PAUL, 150; PC ORCHARD, 150; PC PALMER, 150; PC HAMMOND, 150;  All Saints– C. TRENT, 118; H. RAYNER, 150; R. PLUMMER, 150; BARNARD, 88; W. PINCHARD, 81; J. TRENT, 47.  (IW Observer)
