IW Advertiser, Ryde & Ventnor Times 15 Jan 1876 – Petty Sessions
James Lane was summoned for an assault on Horace Willett, hawker, by striking him a violent blow on the left eye.  – Dismissed.
Minnie Lane was summoned for assault on Lucy Willett, the daughter of Horace Willett, at the same time and place.  Fined 2/6. and 7/6 costs.

IW Advertiser, Ryde & Ventnor Times 29 Jan 1876 – Petty Sessions
Albert Bartlett 12 and Kenneth Arnold 12, of St Helens, were charged with stealing threequarters of a pound of cheese from Mrs Calloway‘s shop on Wednesday last.  Capt Horon said that the prisoners were very bad boys and they were each sentenced to 7 days confinement with hard labour, in Winchester prison and to receive privately, 6 strokes of the birch.

George Dyer was charged with deserting from the Royal Artillery at Woolwich and was ordered to be sent to Winchester Prison, to await the action of the War Office. The Bench recommended that Sgnt Heal of the Isle of Wight Artillery Militia, should be allowed 1pound, for apprehending Dyer.

At a meeting of the Highway Commissioners on Wednesday, it was resolved that the clerk be instructed to prosecute Mr Jackman, builder, Ventnor, for an infringement on the public highway with his building on Bonchurch Shute.

IW Advertiser, Ryde & Ventnor Times. 13 Oct 1877 – County Petty Sessions
James Scovell, Brixton, was summoned for an assault – Edward Jackman said that on Sunday last, when he came out of church he heard someone shout and on looking around he saw defendant beating a boy, and because he asked him to let the boy alone, he struck witness and knocked him down, and on getting up he knocked him down a second time. – Defendant was fined 5/-. and 7/6 costs.

IW Advertiser, Ryde & Ventnor Times. 24 Nov 1877 – County Petty Sessions
Blind Walter Willis, applied to the Bench for advice as to a near neighbour in a garden firing his rifle and striking the end of a workshop in which he worked.  The police had made some enquiry on the subject and applicant was instructed to give information of any recurrence of such acts to the police.  He promised to do so if not shot dead.

Fred Smithers, a boy of about 12 living in Upton-road, was charged with assaulting Miss Phoebe Plaister, head teacher of the Bettesworth-road Board Schools. Complainant said that about 20 minutes before 9 on the morning of the 11th inst. she was passing through Church-street, when defendant came behind her and threw the hood of her cloak over her shoulders and ran away. She said the other teachers had been positively afraid to pass that way to school on account of the boys insulting them …… *

Mrs Sarah Phillimore, West Cowes who was before the court on Saturday last on another charge, was bound over in the sum of 5pounds to keep the peace for three months towards Isabella Banks, to whom she has used threatening language.

Maria Ellis, charged with resisting Policeman Attrill when he was taking two prisoners in charge in South-street on Thursday, was fined 10s. and costs.

Maurice Niblett, Newport, was summoned for damaging the Shide toll-gate, — Mr Wooldridge, who appeared for the prosecutor, said as the defendent had apologised for his offence the prosecutor would not appear against him.

IW Advertiser, Ryde & Ventnor Times 29 Mar 1879 – Ryde Borough Police Court
On Monday, Elizabeth Buxey, a girl of about 18, residing in Dover-street, was brought up in custody charged with stealing a cloth jacket and serge dress of the value of 15s., the property of Louisa Turner, Somerset House, Dover-street. — Pleaded guilty — It appeared from the evidence that prisoner pawned the jacket for 1s. and sold the dress for 2s. — In answer to the Bench, the prisoner said she had no money, and did not know what to do, so she walked into the house and took the things. — Sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour. *

IW Advertiser, Ryde & Ventnor Times 12 Apr 1879 – Hants Sessions
This week, William Henry Legg, labourer, was indicted for stealing a coat from a field, the property of John Harris of Carisbrooke, on 28th January. – Pleaded not guilty. – Mr Bullen appeared for the prosecution, and prisoner was undefended, – The facts have already been established by us. – The jury returned a verdict of guilty, and prisoner was sentenced to two months’ hard labour. *

IW Advertiser, Ryde & Ventnor Times 7 June 1879 – Newport County Bench
Bestsy Baker of Lake, was summoned for damaging a fence on a farm on the Nunwell estate, in the occupation of Mr J.O. Brook. She was fined 1s. and to pay 3d. the amount of damage, the costs being remitted as she was very poor.

Joseph Leonard was fined 5s. and costs for assaulting Mary Poore, nurse-girl to Mrs Hampton, in Crocker-street on the 29th.

IW Advertiser, Ryde & Ventnor Times 5 July 1879 – Ryde Borough Bench
Henry Purkis, a lad living with his parents in Dors-row, was charged with stealing £1 from a little girl. It appeared that the day before he committed the offence the School Board had decided to apply for the lad being sent to a reformatory school and as their clerk now made the application, the magistrates granted it.

George R. Whettingstall, – cab driver at the Pier Hotel, Ryde, was summoned to show cause why he should not be ordered to contribute towards the support of the illiegitimate child of Ellen Rackett, of Saunders Cottage, Carisbrooke — The Bench made an order for payment of 2s. a week till the child is 13 years old.

The Mayor read a letter from Mr Alderman Joseph Futcher, resigning his seat. He (the Mayor) felt that all classes in the Borough would hear with regret that such an old and valuable town officer was about to retire from public life, but increasing infirmity and old age had compelled their old friend Ald. Futcher to take this step…… *

George Attrill and George Masters were summoned for trespassing in search of game on the Osborne estate. – – Edwin Land at 8am on Sunday 5th, was near Her Majesty’s brickyard and saw the defendants together…… *
