Court & Assizes 1880’s from Newspapers

These are names and transcripts from pages that I have obtained in the search for other things, I have not made a search of any particular year. Where there are a succession of dots……. it means there was more detail.

IW Advertiser, Ryde & Ventnor Times 00/05/1880 – Borough Petty Sessions
James Matthews
, blacksmith, Arreton, was summoned for the offence of a crowded bedroom. The Inspector deposed that he always found the house overcrowded. Defendant worked for Mr Barton of Heasley Farm, and lived in a house of two rooms, one above the other. The bedroom was 13ft square and badly ventilated and contained only 650 cubic feet of air. The father, mother and five children slept in it. He had been twice summoned for the nuisance, but neglected to abate it either time as ordered. Dr Foster deposed that each individual member of the family ought at the very least, to have 200ft cube of air, while at present each child has less than 190, and had it not been for the extreme cleanliness of the wife, the consequences might have been very serious, not only to the family, but to the district. Mrs Matthews said they had been promised a better house, and the case was adjourned for a month.
George Henry Winscom, a dwarf, who is employed as a shoemaker, was summoned for using abusive and threatening language – Edwin Winscom said he was the father of the defendant and on Saturday 3rd inst he met him on the corner of Mill-street, when he swore at and made use of threatening language towards him.  The defendant had frequently made use of abusive and threating language when he happened to meet him.  A man named Whittaker gave corroborative evidence.  Defendant was fined 2s.6d and 5s. costs.

George Ash, Chain lane, charged with not sending his child to school and whose case has been several times adjourned, was to have attended before the magistrates again today.  Mr Frederic Stratton appeared on behalf of the School Board, who he said regretted the action of the Bench in granting so many adjournments, which had evidently not produced a good effect and the Board asked that a penalty might be imposed.  As the defendant was undergoing a term of imprisonment for an assault on the child in question, he did not appear and the case was further adjourned for a fortnight.
